Koryo

Koryo is tenth pattern, taught at the red belt level. While this is the black belt first dan pattern in the World Taekwondo syllabus, in our school we are awarded first dan ranking immediately upon grading from red belt to black belt.

    • Pushing hands
    • 90 turn (facing left)
      • Right back stance, double knife hand block
      • Right leg double side kick (knee height, then head height)
      • Right front stance, right knifehand strike
      • Left middle punch
      • Left back stance, right inner forearm block
    • 180 turn (facing right)
      • Left back stance, double knife hand block
      • Left leg double side kick (knee height, then head height)
      • Left front stance, left knifehand strike
      • Right middle punch
      • Right back stance, left inner forearm block
    • 90 turn (facing front)
      • Left front stance, left low knifehand block, right arc-hand strike
      • Right front kick, stepping into right front stance, right low knifehand block, left arc-hand strike

      • Right front kick, stepping into right front stance, knee break (right hand brushes past right leg in a scooping motion, left hand performs knee break movement)
    • 180 turn (facing back)… stepping forward with left leg turning clockwise
      • Right front stance, mid-height inner forearm opening block
      • Left front kick, stepping into left front stance, knee break (left hand brushes past left leg in a scooping motion, right hand performs knee break movement)
      • Left walking stance (slide left foot back), inner forearm opening block
    • 180 turn (facing front, moving left)… stepping back with right leg turning clockwise
      • horse-riding stance, left knifehand side block
      • target punch (right hand punch, straight right arm, into open left hand)
      • cross stance (right leg in front of left)
      • left side kick (pulling leg back after kick)
    • 180 turn (facing right)
      • right front stance (after pulling left leg back from side kick, pivot right foot 180 and drop left leg back into front stance)
      • left low fingertip thrust
      • right walking stance (slide right foot back), right low block
      • left walking stance, left downward palmheel block
    • 90 turn (facing front)
      • horse stance (moving right foot), right assisted elbow strike
      • right knifehand side block
      • target punch (open right hand as if grabbing back of oponent’s neck, left straight arm punch into right hand)
      • cross stance (left foot in front of right)
      • right side kick (bringing left and right hands back to left side waist)
    • 90 turn (facing left)
      • left front stance (retract right foot after side kick, pivot 90 degrees to left and place right foot back into front stance)
      • right low fingertip thrust (left hand up with palm facing shoulder)
      • left walking stance (slide left foot back), left low block
      • right walking stance, right downward palmheel block
    • 90 turn (facing front)
      • horse stance (moving left foot), left assisted elbow strike
      • heels together (moving right foot), left low hammerfist target strike
    • 180 turn (facing back)
