4 Directional

While 4 Directional is not technically a pattern but rather a sequence of common movements, this is the first pattern we learned, while at white belt. It showcases the foundational techniques of blocking and punching.

(left and right), alternatives

  • Punching
    • Mid section punch, low block
    • High section punch, high block
    • Horizontal spear hand, knife hand guarding block
    • Side punch, inner forearm block
  • Kicking
    • Step back with right leg into front stance, crossing block
    • Front kick, left turn stepping back with right leg into front stance, crossing block

Basic sequence (right side)

  1. Junbi (ready stance)
  2. Right front stance, Right mid section punch
  3. Left turn (rotate left foot in same position, now facing to the left of the training hall), step right foot back into Left front stance, Left low block
  4. Step right foot forward (rotate left foot in same position, still facing to the left of the training hall), Right front stance, Right mid section punch
  5. Left turn (rotate left foot in same position, now facing to the back of the training hall), step right foot back into Left front stance, Left low block
  6. Step right foot forward (rotate left foot in same position, still facing to the back of the training hall), Right front stance, Right mid section punch
  7. Left turn (rotate left foot in same position, now facing to the right of the training hall), step right foot back into Left front stance, Left low block
  8. Step right foot forward (rotate left foot in same position, still facing to the right of the training hall), Right front stance, Right mid section punch with Kihap
  9. (wait for instructor) Left turn (rotate left foot in same position, now facing the front of the training hall again), move right foot into Junbi (ready stance)
