{"id":62,"date":"2021-12-05T10:34:32","date_gmt":"2021-12-05T10:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/whiteman-online.com.au\/games\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2021-12-10T13:15:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T13:15:39","slug":"adventure-game-concepts","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/whiteman-online.com.au\/games\/adventure-game-concepts\/","title":{"rendered":"Adventure Game Concepts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are my notes that I have collected while researching What is an Adventure Game and What makes a good Adventure Game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Defining an Adventure Game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Original adventure games<ul><li>Adventure<\/li><li>Zork<\/li><li>King&#8217;s Quest<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Storyline<ul><li>Story is important in AGs but not everything<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Problem Solving<ul><li>AGs present problems that the character must solve within the context of the story<\/li><li>AG problems are not solved by shooting or real-time running\/jumping\/ducking.<\/li><li>Solutions should be difficult to discover but easy to perform<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Deterministic or stochastic (randomness)<ul><li>AGs are deterministic meaning that they have the same result when the same actions are taken<\/li><li>In contrast, Role Playing Games (RPGs) are stochastic meaning that they have a randomness factor (rolling a die) and the same user actions will often lead to different results.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Definition<ul><li>QUOTE: an adventure is the &#8220;deterministic, intellectual problem solving in the context of a story&#8221; (source: Ref#1)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">(IN PROGRESS)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Properties of an Adventure Game<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Story\/Plot<ul><li>Background story is the history (game world and character) before the game starts<\/li><li>Story can be explained up front (intro or first few sections of the game) or revealed during game play (non player characters, notes)<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Plot is what is learned during the game (can be captured in a journal)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Gameplay<ul><li>This is a combination of all actions performed by the player&#8217;s character<\/li><li>Gameplay is not the method (key presses, mouse clicks) used by the player to control the character<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Challenge<ul><li>Overcoming different types of obstacles, including:<ul><li>inventory based problems<\/li><li>dialog trees<\/li><li>machine twiddling<\/li><li>sliders<\/li><li>timed sequences<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Linearity<ul><li>2 types<ul><li>Geographic&#8230; path the player takes through the game world<ul><li>Player can be led through a single path (linear)<\/li><li>Player can be allowed to roam freely (non-linear)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Gameplay&#8230; the order challenges can be solved<ul><li>Specific sequence (linear)<\/li><li>No sequence, allowed to solve in any order (non-linear)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Hybrid where player moves through a linear sequence of chapters but can roam freely within the game world of each chapter<\/li><li>Another type of hybrid leads the player along different branches of the game solving challenges in sequence within each branch, but the branches can be played in any sequence<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Relevancy<ul><li>Believability of the challenges within the game world within context of the story<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Constraint<ul><li>2 types<ul><li>time&#8230; set time period to complete the challenge<\/li><li>geography&#8230; access to parts of the game world is restricted until specific challenges (or maybe game branches) are completed<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What makes a good Adventure Game?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Game World<ul><li>Well defined world at the start<\/li><li>Populated with characters that are not part of the gameplay (plot)<\/li><li>Player&#8217;s character helps to define the world, not just discover it<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Linearity<ul><li>No right\/wrong<\/li><li>Linear&#8230;
